ATLANTA, GA -- A Fulton County jury has convicted an Atlanta man of murdering a Sandy Springs resident during a drug deal that turned deadly.

The jury convicted Patricko Mondrez Davis, 23, on charges of felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Davis was sentenced by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jackson Bedford Jr. to life in prison plus five years, the District Attorney's Office said Thursday.

According to the office, on July 24, 2014, Takeenen Williams, 23, his girlfriend and his roommate all drove to the Hub, student housing provided by the Art Institute of Atlanta near Barfield Road and Hammond Drive in Sandy Springs.

The trio drove to the residence to buy marijuana from Davis. Williams' roommate met with Davis in the breezeway of his apartment where he "paid for a portion of the marijuana," the DA's office states.

Following that partial transaction, the roommate told Davis to walk to the woman's vehicle for the rest of the money.

The District Attorney's Office said Williams refused to pay Davis because he believed he owned him money. Moments later, prosecutors argued Davis brandished a firearm when the victim did not give back the drugs or pay for the marijuana.

Williams tried to grab the gun from Davis when he was shot five times, the DA's office adds. Sandy Springs police previously told Patch Williams was found lying in the rear parking lot of an office complex where it connects to the Sheraton at 800 Hammond Drive and the Hub.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Davis fled the scene, and was later apprehended by U.S. Marshal's Office Fugitive Task Force officials in Bakersfield, California.

The defendant was brought back to Fulton County where he was identified by witnesses at the scene.
