Riverwood International Charter Students Win Scholarships

Tylea Southerland who was selected from more than 57,000 applicants as one of the 1,000 2015 Gates Millennium Scholars while Luka Marinkovic was chosen to receive the Indiana University Wells Scholarship.

Established in 1999 with the goal of developing Leaders for America’s Future™, the GMS program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The GMS program removes the financial barriers to education for high-performing, low-income students.

The program each year enables 5,000 students to attend and graduate from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities, United Negro College Fund member institutions and other institutions that serve minority students.

Each year, between 18 and 22 incoming freshmen to Indiana University receive the award, based solely on merit. The Wells Scholarship ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Named in honor of Herman B Wells, Indiana University’s beloved 11th president, the Wells Scholarship provides full tuition, mandatory and course-related fees, and a living stipend for four years of undergraduate study on IU’s Bloomington campus. Scholars may choose to spend one of these years studying abroad through the university’s overseas study programs.

Wells Scholars are also members of the Hutton Honors College, where they can apply for grants in support of research, internships, creative activity, conference travel, and honors thesis work.
