  • We average 3 to 4 cellphone thefts a week at retail shops, grocery stores, and restaurants when the victim simply places the phone down on the counter, table, or chair and either forgets it or doesn’t monitor it. That’s why you have pockets. Stash it. If you’re wearing a dress, well put the phone in your wallet or purse. If at a restaurant, place the purse between the legs of the chair with one leg of the chair inside the loop of the strap. Close the purse. To get to it, the thief would have to crawl under your chair/table area—which there is a pervert category believe it or not, but your chances are good that your phone will be secure.

Burglary

  • Trader Joe’s, 6277 Roswell Road 30328, 7/25: Apparently someone cut the power to the store at around 2:30 a.m. The manager found pry marks on the two front doors. It appears that the attempt was not successful.

  • A 54-year-old woman said she had furniture on layaway at the Overstock Liquidators at 8610 Roswell Road. She made a total of $1,400 in payments between March and May. She went to the store to pay the balance of $600 and to pick up the furniture and was told the person who worked at the store left and took the money with him. The woman was also told the store is under new management who will not honor the layaway agreement.

He was told of a website for lost dogs. He checked it and seven days later located the dog on the website. He contacted the site and was put in touch with another man who found the dog and listed the dog as lost on the site. That man said he gave the dog to a woman named Jennifer to keep until the owner was located. The victim contacted the lady who said she wanted the dog’s vet bill paid before she would and she now will not answer the phone. The case is ongoing.

Other Things

  • 1155 Mt. Vernon Hwy, 30328, 7/26: A 29-year-old man said he was attacked by a poodle while jogging. He said he jogged past a woman with a poodle on a leash and the poodle jumped up, biting him on the leg.
  • During a July 28 burglary call on Hammond Drive, a man found in the home ran from the home with police officers chasing him. K-9 dogs were called out. During that time an officer, accompanied by a K-9 officer and dog, was in the wooded area, following the trail of the suspect. The officer accidentally stepped on a yellow jacket’s nest causing them to swarm and spray him with that hormone stuff, which is a call to the yellow jacket Calvary, who attacked the officer. The K-9 officer and dog, standing inches away, were left alone, apparently un-sprayed. Now to make matters worse for the poor officer who was now flailing away due to yellow jackets having found a way under his vest, and pants, stepped in front of the K-9. The dog, seeing the officer flailing away in front of him, interpreted that as an attempt to attack his handler and so the K-9 did what they’re trained to do, and commenced to “whuppin’” that officer by way of grabbing his arm. Well, once the handler reeled the K-9 back in, the officer had a bite or two, in addition to a number of stings (fortunately he was not allergic.) He was treated and released from Northside Hospital.

Arrests

  • On July 25, officers were called to the Publix at 6300 Powers Ferry Road regarding an argument between a man and woman. The man said he was having a verbal argument with his wife but nothing that was physically abusive. Turns out he was wanted in Forsyth County for a theft warrant and as such, he was arrested.
  • 5300 Roswell Road, 30342, 7/26: Following a traffic stop at 4:39 a.m., the officer discovered the driver’s license status of the driver was suspended and on top of that, he found a glass pipe and traces of crack cocaine. The driver was arrested.
  • A female officer was inside the Arby’s on Hammond Drive around 9 a.m. She noticed a man sitting in the dining area with a pair of jean shorts, unzipped and his hand inside. Being a veteran police officer, she saw this as a clue that this scenario was not normal. She reported that the man fondled himself for several seconds before she confronted him. He told her he was scratching himself to which she informed him that if he itched to a point that it required 10-15 seconds to scratch, that he was one, yucky, and two, should probably go into the restroom to scratch — if that were the case — which was not. He was charged with indecency. Arby’s management issued him a criminal trespass warning, not to return, in the presence of the officer.
  • 8300 block of Roswell Road, 30350, 7/27: Just before 10 p.m. cops were called to the Kroger regarding a shoplifting. They said a black male, white shirt and jean shorts, took some ground beef and walked out. One of the officers located a man matching the description in front of an adjacent store. He told the officers he bought it and had given the meat to his niece — apparently not knowing that he was on video seen taking the beef, walking around to another aisle, and then passing the self-checkout. The beef was stashed behind the store. He was arrested on the $48 theft.
  • 8879 Roswell Road, 30350, 7/27: Officers were called to North River Tavern on a disturbance. They found that two men who worked together were drinking when one told the other he didn’t work hard enough. According to one of the men, the other scratched his neck so he acted in self-defense which, according to witnesses, was head-butting the other guy, then choking him. The first guy was charged with disorderly conduct and yes, alcohol was involved. Capt. Steve Rose says: I don’t think that anyone in the work place can keep a secret told to him or her by another employee because as circumstances change, so do friendships. Drinking with your friends is one thing, but drinking with fellow employees can be another. Many times it’s not healthy for your career.
  • 5555 New Northside Drive, 30339, 7/29: Wells Fargo Bank employees notified police that a man was at the location attempting to cash a $1,500 check. On verification with the check’s owner, they said they had not issued the man a check. He was arrested while waiting for the teller to cash it.
  • 300 Carpenter Drive, 30328, 7/31: A robbery call went out in the late morning hours on two suspects who robbed a maintenance man on Carpenter Drive. A lookout was given on two suspects and a small white car. A patrol officer spotted a car matching the description at Roswell and I-285. He initiated a traffic stop but the car fled. The suspects with officers pursuing, drove I-285 to about where I-20 exits to the right where the small white car wrecked against the median wall. One suspect fled and one was captured at the scene of the wreck. The second suspect was later caught under a porch hiding in a nearby residential area. Both were arrested. The money and two weapons were recovered.

Domestic Violence Arrests

  • 8300 block of Roswell Road, 30350, 7/26: Around 5:30 a.m., while we were sleeping, officers responded to a domestic argument at an apartment. The man said his girlfriend was drunk and pounding on his door demanding to speak to him. The officer noted that while he was trying to speak to the man, the woman was yelling so loudly that the officer had to caution her to cool it because the other residents could probably hear them. The officer separated the two and escorted her to the parking lot where he suggested she call a friend, or call a cab, or he would take her to the Marta station to catch a bus. She refused to go anywhere unless the boyfriend took her personally. She was later arrested.
