📰 News we're reading

1. Stray cat in Savannah tests positive for rabies (wjcl.com) — Chatham County health officials are warning Savannah residents after a stray cat found near Stephenson and Waters avenues tested positive for rabies. Neighbors are urged to avoid unfamiliar animals, keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date, and report bites to Chatham County Animal Services and Environmental Health while watching for unusual or aggressive animal behavior.

2. Stormwater project to shut down portion of Savannah's Abercorn Street into 2027 (wjcl.com) — Drivers on Savannah's south side face long-term lane closures on Abercorn Street between 57th and 58th through January 2027 for storm drain work, with other shutdowns on Tremont, Magazine, and Barnard. The city is also pushing major canal and flood-mitigation projects and a multi-million-dollar stormwater bond to tackle drainage issues across all six aldermanic districts.

3. Savannah City Council halts large data center plans to review city resources (thecurrentga.org) — Savannah's city council has hit pause on large-load data centers for 155 days while staff study how much strain they'd put on local water and power systems. The moratorium blocks big new facilities and large warehouse conversions, giving officials time to set clearer rules as Georgia's data center boom reaches Savannah.

4. Savannah Music Festival, teachers partner for Musical Explorers program (wsav.com subscription) — Hundreds of Savannah-area elementary students will again dive into global music this school year through the Savannah Music Festival's free Musical Explorers program, developed with Carnegie Hall. Local teachers are training now to bring rhythm & blues, Vaudeville, and Greek folk music into their classrooms, leading up to a live concert where students meet the musicians they've been studying.

5. Georgia gas prices fall 3 cents to $3.78 a gallon (thegeorgiasun.com) — Savannah drivers are now paying an average of $3.81 per gallon for regular gas, just below the state average of $3.78. Prices dipped slightly over the past week and month, but remain far higher than a year ago as national gas costs stay elevated.
