Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. Chatham County District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones has announced that her office will no longer prosecute misdemeanor cannabis charges. The decision is reportedly tied to the GBI Operations Bulletin's announcement from Sept. 2019 stating that its crime lab would no longer accept cannabis weighing less than an ounce unless it was evidence in a felony charge. Since the District Attorney cannot test cannabis evidence in a misdemeanor, her office cannot investigate misdemeanor cannabis charges. (WTOC)
  2. It has been confirmed that the rifle used during the recent elementary school mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas was manufactured by a company founded in Savannah. The rifle was manufactured by Daniel Defense and was purchased at a local federal firearms licensee the week before the shooting. Daniel Defense reportedly declined to comment at this time. (WTOC)
  3. An unreadable memory card is withholding approximately 4,000 votes in the Savannah-Chatham School Board presidential election. Roger Moss is currently holding a 10,000 vote lead but without additional votes, the election will go to a runoff. The Chatham Elections Board will manually count the missing votes now.
