Campbell High News To Use

A quick peek at what's going on at Smyrna's high school.

is fortunate to have so many different cultures, religions, and ethnicities that coexist peacefully amongst the staff and students. To celebrate Campbell’s diversity, the school recently staged its popular International Festival.

The event featured a Parade of Nations and a presentation by senior poet and rapper Isaiah Hunter that can be found here.

Randy McClure, a CHS science department head and head girls’ basketball coach, was recently presented with a plaque after being selected as the Coca-Cola 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year. McClure guided the Lady Spartans to the Class AAAAA Final Four last season and was named the Cobb County Coach of the Year.

McClure was also selected the CHS Teacher of the Year in 2004 and 2010.

More than 30 schools from New York, Missouri, Kansas, Alabama, Florida, and Wisconsin competed earlier this month in a JROTC competition near Molena, Ga. The CHS Lady Spartans, lead by Karina Vazquaz, took fifth in PT and three-mile run; fourth in a very tough Gaunt; third in the Rope Bridge; and fifth overall. 

Seniors on this year’s team include Maricarmen Ordonez, Patti Graham, Sandra Gonzales, and Irisse Prado. 

The boys, lead by Jose Aboytes, took fourth in PT; third in Cross Country Rescue; second in the very tough Gaunt; and fourth overall. 

Seniors on this year’s team include Aboytes, Luis Carranza, Juan Castro, Derek Cathey, Aaron Churchill, Kevin Gonzalez, Fabian Rodriguez, Makini Thomas, Erick Turribriates, and Angel Peralta.

The CHS marching band recently placed first in Class A at the Creekview Classic. The group received all "superior'' ratings in percussion, color guard, and band. The Spartan color guard also received first place in their class at the competition. Zachary Cogdill directed the band at the Canton, Ga., event.

Congratulations to the varsity wrestling team for beginning the season a perfect 7-0. The hot start included wins over Blessed Trinity and Norcross over the Thanksgiving break.

Over the past weekend the team placed first in the Blue Devil Classic held at Norcross High. Individual first-place finishers included Jaderis Victrum, John Beasley, Jamez Taylor and Jude Louissaint

Placing second were Sid Robinson, Charles Robinson, Mac Braylock, Morgan Ford and Alex Cooke

Akiva Tharpe placed third while Jeriemie Tuzizila and Anthony Wessels recorded fourth-place efforts.
