Early Voting In Smyrna Runoff 2019 Election Set

Early voting in the Smyrna runoff election is set for Nov. 25-27.

SMYRNA, GA — Early voting for the City of Smyrna runoff will take place Nov. 25-27 at the Election Main Office, 736 Whitlock Ave NW #400, Marietta, from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and at the Smyrna Community Center, 200 Village Green Cir SE, Smyrna, from 9 a.m–5 p.m.

Voters will once again decide on a new mayor and a city council member for the city’s Ward 2.
The official runoff election date is Dec. 3 between mayoral candidates Derek Norton and Ryan Campbell. In Ward 2 it between incumbent council member Andrea Blustein and challenger Austin Wagner. The City of Smyrna polls are open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on that day.

Of the five candidates, Norton had the most votes election night with 3,724 votes of 7,907. Campbell followed behind with 1,957. In Ward 2 Wagner gained two more votes than incumbent Bluestein, making Wagner the projected winner.

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, since none of the candidates received the 50 percent plus one vote needed to win, the runoff is required.

Norton won 47 percent of the vote and Campbell, 24.8 percent of the vote. Wagner won 50.1 percent of the vote and Bluestein, 49.9 percent.

Two provisional ballots, both supporting Blustein, were counted Nov. 8, Cobb County Elections and Registration Director Janine Eveler confirmed to the MDJ.

“The race is now a tie,” Eveler said. By the Friday deadline, four absentee ballots from military or overseas citizens were still outstanding in the race.

“No additional ballots came in, so we are re-running this race,” she said.
