Have You Hugged Your School Nurse Today?

Sure, Friday the 13th creeps around the corner. Who cares! It's Wednesday the 11th and what a day it is!

Do you know that today is a very special day for a lot of reasons? No, it’s not a national holiday. No, you don’t need to run out and buy your mom a gift. Not unless she’s a school nurse, or a receptionist or if she works the night shift.

That’s right, today is National School Nurse Day, National Receptionist Day and National Third Shift Workers Day.

Simone Sandoval is the school nurse at in Smyrna. Tuesday, students from all grades at Belmont Hills honored her and her hard work with handmade cards. Sandoval received about 50 cards in all.

“They made them, they put flowers in them, they drew pictures, they wrote stories,” she said.

Sandoval received so many cards from the students that she hasn’t had a chance to read them all. She plans to keep the cards and possibly put them in a scrapbook.

Debbie Bright, the school nurse at Trinity School in Vinings, received more emails than she could count thanking her for her work at the school.

“I get the smiles and the appreciation, and for me, everyday is school nurse day at this school,” Bright said.

Unfortunately, none of the receptionists we spoke to had received any recognition. in Smyrna honored its receptionists last month for Administrative Professionals’ Day

We wanted to call some third shift workers and ask how they had been honored today, but we figured letting them sleep in was appreciation enough.
