Georgia's 50 Safest Towns: 2018 Rankings

A study by the National Council for Home Safety and Security took a look at violent crime and property crime rates across Georgia.

ATLANTA, GA β€” A new ranking of crime rates from the National Council for Home Safety and Security shows that the safest cities in Georgia range from the Atlanta metropolitan area to Savannah, Warner Robins and towns in between. Georgia crime statistics of 3.98 reported violent crimes per 1,000 put it in the top 30 in the United States overall. Once you account for Atlanta’s high crime rates, Georgia’s statewide crime trends aren’t that bad, the website says.

The city of Johns Creek, a northeast Atlanta suburb, is Georgia’s safest community. Its 27 reported violent crimes and 687 property crimes are "terrifically low in respect to its large population" of 84,629 the website says.

To identify the safest cities in Georgia, the website reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with population data and internal research. Any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI or towns with populations under 10,000 were eliminated from consideration.

The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total (due to their severity) than property crimes.

According to the rankings, Johns Creek was rated No. 1 for safety. Rounding out the top five are Milton (0.26 violent crimes per 1,000 people), Groveton (0.89), Peachtree City (0.54), and Dallas (0.84).
