Smyrna-Vinings School News You Can Use

This week's roundup of Smyrna-Vinings school news features award winners, fundraisers and nature hikes.

Whitefield Academy celebrated its on Friday, March 16. The festivities began in front of the Whitefield Stadium with the basketball team traveling around campus in Whitefield buses while teachers, classmates, friends and family watched.

The Smyrna Education Foundation recently presented awards to two Smyrna elementary schools. The foundation awarded two teachers $25 gift certificates for their efforts to go above and beyond for education. Taylor Osborne and Betty Crowe were awarded the 212 Award for the extra money they helped raise to pay for the March third grade field trip.

“It made my heart smile seeing them win an award from their peers for their extra effort,” said Kara Gold, Smyrna Education Foundation board member.

received a grant that paid for its subscription to BrainPop, an animated educational resource for students and teachers.

“Everyday when I walk in through the classrooms I see teachers using BrainPop," Linda Keeney, King Springs Elementary School principal, told the foundation. “We use it for lessons and live video streaming. It helps us put technology into action. Without the Smyrna Education Foundation’s help, we mostly wouldn’t have been able to purchase this online resource.”

In other news from King Springs, the school will hold a Fitness Walk, Sunday March 18. King Springs parents and students are invited to Heritage Park at 3 p.m. for a quick hike. After the nature walk families can learn how to plant sunflowers and even take some home for their gardens.

is looking for a strong turnout for one of its last Spirit Nights of the school year. Student and their families are encouraged to eat at Tuesday, March 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stevi B’s will donate 10 percent of each Campbell Middle School family’s order. Don’t forget to tell the cashier you’re there to support Campbell.

will also hold Spirit Night at Stevi B’s on Thursday March 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The following week Griffin Middle School's Spirit Night will be at from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Raise some money for the Wildcats while enjoying tasty food.

Griffin Middle School will celebrate its 40th anniversary Sunday, March 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration includes performance by the student orchestra and choir. Teachers students and administrators from past and present are invited to attend and share their favorite Griffin memories. 

Parents, students and community members interested in finding out what private citizens can do to help schools in Smyrna can attend an education roundtable Sunday, March 25 at . Leo Smith, Smyrna Education Foundation member and Smyrna-Vinings Patch blogger, hosts the roundtable and will share education updates from his recent trip to Washington D.C.
