Spartan hoops teams roll to Tuesday night sweep
Campbell boys bounce back at Kennesaw Mountain after Saturday's upset loss at Marietta.

The sixth-ranked Campbell Lady Spartans had little issue Tuesday night at Kennesaw Mountain as they rolled to a 69-27 win to improve to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in Region 4-AAAAA play.
Guards Chakecia Miller and Erica Norwood led the way for Campbell with 11 points each in a balanced scoring night for coach Randy McClure’s team. Baylee Hawkins and Angel Foster both chipped in nine, and Jaleesea Phillips added seven points.
Also Tuesday, the Campbell boys bounced back from Saturday’s upset loss at Marietta to secure a 77-65 win over Kennesaw Mountain. The victory upped the third-ranked Spartans to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in region action.

Roderick Perkins led Campbell to victory by scoring 32 points, pulling down 17 rebounds and coming up with six steals. Matt Cotton added 21 points and dished out eight assists, while Justin Seymour tallied 17 points.
Once again, the Lady Spartans’ frenetic pace of play was too much for an overmatched opponent.

“We forced them into 27 turnovers, and that’s always a goal of ours to get them above 20,” said McClure. “We had 25 assists, so we’re sharing the basketball. That’s where the balanced scoring comes from, so that’s very good. And we had 20-something steals. We were definitely trying to up-tempo the ball.”
With last week’s ice storm playing havoc with schedules around the state, the Campbell girls will be among the countless teams forced to cram make-up games into the upcoming schedule. Next week, the team will play four games: Tuesday versus Hillgrove, Wednesday versus Harrison, and Friday at McEachern and Saturday at North Cobb.
And because of the unbalanced schedule the following week, Saturday’s non-region (and therefore non-essential, in the eyes of the Georgia High School Association) match-up with AAAAA No. 8 Stephenson has been canceled.
Next on the docket for McClure’s team is a trip to South Cobb on Friday at 6 p.m. Although the Lady Eagles have struggled so far this year, McClure and his squad of experienced players are taking nothing for granted.
"In this region you can't look past anybody," McClure said. "South Cobb is young with a new coach, and they're trying to build. But they're scrappy."
The boys will also meet for two extra games next week, playing right after the girls against the same opponents — and Saturday’s Stephenson match-up is canceled, as well.
Next up is a road game against South Cobb, 10-5 overall and 2-3 in region play, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The visiting Eagles took Campbell to the wire on Dec. 7, as the Spartans won a 93-88 overtime thriller.
