State Board of Education applauds Griffin Middle
Smyrna school came off the Needs Improvement list last year.

State Schools Superintendent Dr. John Barge and members of the State Board of Education recently recognized as one of Georgia’s eleven state directed schools that was able to come off the Needs Improvement list in 2010.
This was accomplished through continued increases in student achievement that resulted in Griffin making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2008 – 2009 and the 2009 – 2010 school years. During those periods, Griffin not only made AYP, but also doubled the percentage of students who exceeded standards on the math portion of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).
“Griffin Middle School was able to make AYP for two consecutive years because each of the essential pieces of the puzzle came together,’’ said Griffin principal Darryl York. “Through the cooperative work and support of our district, GaDoE, and our faculty and staff, we were able to create a laser focus on our specific areas of need. This teamwork approach allowed us to do more than any one group could have done alone.”
