Walk to School Day

Vinings students hit the pavement Friday

The Lovett School has been the educational home for many Vinings families for the last half century. And for the most part, those students have depended upon cars to get back and forth from campus.

But not Friday, or now better known as "Walk to School Day." With last week's re-opening of Hermi's Bridge spanning the Chattahoochee River, students in the Cochise neighborhood now have a protected sidewalk to use all the way to Lovett.

The midtown-founded school, which has been at its current Paces Ferry Road location since the 1960-61 school year, removed the "no walking or biking'' clause from its Parent/Student Handbook this year. In recognizing such, Friday's event is part of the school's long-term goal of developing sustainable practices in the area of transportation.

The hope is that someday the nearby streets will be lined with sidewalks and bike lanes, utilizing traffic calming devices so students have an option to walk or bike to school.

The school is stressing safety and asking that only students who can walk to school along streets paved with sidewalks come by foot. Also, for parents to take time to educate about safe walking and biking procedures.

Lovett Girl Scout Troop #3332 will provide hot cocoa and other treats for students as they enter campus. And if you live too far to walk, don't worry and instead hitch a ride with a friend as Friday's also "Carpool Day."
