Burglary Capital of America a Small Georgia County

Sumter County in south Georgia has the highest number of burglaries and violent crime per resident of any U.S. county.

A small, south Georgia county has been ranked the burglary capital of the United States.

FindtheHome.com researched the the most recent estimates from the American Community Survey (2014) and then determined the U.S. county in every state with the highest burglary rate per 100,000 people. It sorted the list from lowest to highest burglary rates and included total burglaries and violent crime statistics for each county.

​It only considered counties with a population ​equal to or greater than​ the 50th percentile within the state.

Sumter County, with a population of 31,804, came in at No. 1 on the list.

According to FBI crime statistics, Sumter County had 669 burglaries in 2014, or 2,197.8 burglaries per 100,000 people. It also had 212 violent crimes, or 666.6 such incidents per 100,000.

Nearly 1.73 million burglaries occurred in the U.S. in 2014, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although most standard homeowner's insurance policies cover the costs associated with damaged and stolen property due to burglary, victims can suffer from fear and anxiety in the aftermath.

The FBI defines burglary as the unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft. To classify an offense as a burglary, the use of force to gain entry need not have occurred.
