Church of God's State Overseer Dies

Billy Joe Moffett, 81, a bishop for the Church of God died on Sunday. Interment services are Wednesday in Mableton.

Rev. Billy Joe Moffett, 81, died Sunday with his family at his bedside at Hospice of Chattanooga. He was an ordained bishop in the Church of God and was a state overseer for the Churches of God in Colorado/Wyoming, Maryland/Delaware/D.C. and South Georgia.

Moffett was also an evangelist and a pastor in the states of Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. He also served as the director of the Department of Benevolence and as superintendent of the Church of God Home for Children.

According to this story in Charisma Magazine, Moffett died as a result of his injuries that he sustained from a freak accident. About three weeks ago, a customer at a local home improvement store accidentally backed into an outdoor register, injuring Moffett and others.

He was born February 2, 1930 in Atlanta to the late Joseph and Velma Moffett.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Clyde Moffett, Mildred Grantham, Doris Robinson and Hazel Williams; and two sons, Timothy and Mark Moffett.

He is survived by his wife, Ailene Moffett; daughter, Reba, and her husband, Gregory Morris; son, Brad, and his wife, Melissa Moffett; grandchildren, Sean Morris and Morgan Moffett; two nephews and three nieces.

Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. at the North Cleveland Church of God Main Sanctuary. Interment will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mount Harmony Memorial Gardens in Mableton.

Because of Rev. Moffett’s involvement in founding the following ministries, the family requests that memorials be given to the New River Ranch or the Heart of Florida Ranch for troubled boys.
