Eagles Are Making History

South Cobb is in the second round for the first time ever.

South Cobb started playing football in 1952. In the 59 seasons since then, the Eagles never won a playoff game. All of that changed last week when traveled to Savannah and beat Windsor Forrest 32-28 for their first state playoff win ever.

Maybe it was because the Eagles were playing so far from home. Maybe there was a lack of pressure to win. Maybe it was a lot of things that enabled South Cobb to win; the bottom line is the Eagles will be playing in the second round of the GHSA state football playoffs this week.

Little used Ryan Sumner scored on a 35-yard pass by quarterback Stephon Masha with just over a minute to play to clinch the historic win. Sumner had scored just one touchdown all season until his game-winning catch. Brandon Watson sealed a trip to the second round with an interception.

Sumner was the late-game hero, but running back Chris Beck was heroic all night for the Eagles. The senior ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Quarterback Stephon Masha was very efficient, completing 15 of 23 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

The price of travel, accomodations, and food cost South Cobb over $10,000. A trip to the second round for the first time in school history, priceless.

If the Eagles want to earn another playoff win, they are going to have to do it against an extremely tough Walton team. The Raiders are 11-0 and beat Milton 48-14 last week. Beating Walton would be a monumental upset. However, bear in mind that South Cobb was not expected to make the playoffs a couple of weeks ago, then they weren't expected to win in the first round and they did.
