South Cobb Schools Prepare for 'Bracket Friday'

Eagles and Falcons battle for playoff positions, Wolfpack battle Patriots

The final week of the regular season has been designated "Bracket Friday" by the GHSA in anticipation of the playoff brackets being filled out by the state qualifiers.

took a major hit to their playoff chances with a loss to North Cobb last week. The Eagles are in a win-or-go-home situation now, as they are tied with North Cobb for the final playoff spot in region 4-5A.

In an ironic twist, clinched a playoff spot last week, with a win over Campbell, combined with the South Cobb loss. The Falcons are 4-2 in the region and hold the tie-breaker over North Cobb. Win or lose this week, Pebblebrook is in the playoffs.

The Falcons come into this game without much to lose. Pebblebrook has already locked up a postseason spot. With a win the Falcons would earn the No. 3 seed out of region 4-5A; a loss would bump them down to No.4.

The Eagles have everything to lose. The shocking loss to North Cobb 21-16 last week put South Cobb into a must-win situation. A win gives the Eagles the No. 3 seed; a loss ends their season. North Cobb holds the all-important tie-breaker over the Eagles in region 4-5A.

South Cobb quarterback Stephon Masha had a forgettable outing against the Warriors, throwing three interceptions. Running back Chris Beck had 100 yards rushing in the first half, but could only muster 34 in the second half. Both Masha and Beck have to carry the Eagles if they want to make the playoffs.

Pebblebrook can play as loose as they did against Campbell last week, as they stomped the Spartans 44-16. Quarteback C.J. Goodman was spectacular for the Falcons, rushing for a game-high 152 yards and three touchdowns.

Both teams have capable quarterbacks and good running games. South Cobb obviously has more to play for and the home-field advantage. The Eagles seniors should have a major effect on the outcome of this game, since it could be their last game. However, just like last year, this should be a close game.

Whitefield Academy at Mount Pisgah Christian

The Wolfpack were crushed 45-0 last week against Our Lady of Mercy. It was the sixth loss of the season and by far, the most disappointing. Whitefield had beaten the Bobcats two of the previous three years and only lost by six points last season. This was a game that should have been closer.

Quarterback Max Kemether threw two interceptions that were ran back for touchdowns. It was the last home game for the seniors and it could not have been worse for those outgoing Wolfpack players.

Thankfully, Whitefield has another chance to end the season on a high note. The Wolfpack will travel to Mount Pisgah Christian in hopes of earning their fourth win of the season and finishing things off right for the seniors.

The Patriots are a beatable team with a 4-5 overall record and a current three-game losing streak. The Wolfpack are beatable themselves, so this game is hard to predict. If Kemether can complete passes instead of throwing interceptions, Whitefield has a chance.

Prediction: Whitefield Academy 31, Mount Pisgah Christian 30
