Police Shooting Kills Man In Cobb

Authorities say officers shot and killed a man accused of pulling out a handgun in Powder Springs.

POWDER SPRINGS, GA — A man killed in a police shooting Tuesday night in Powder Springs has been identified.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday said the shooting came after Powder Springs Police responded to a call about a mental-health episode around 9 p.m. in the 3000 block of New MacLand Road.

When officers began interacting with the man, the GBI said he pulled out a handgun. Others than shot him multiple times, the GBI said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the GBI said.

They identified the man as Gustavo Guimaraes, 34, of Acworth.

Officers did not suffer any injuries, the GBI said.

Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
