Young Pebblebrook Falcons Knocking on The Door

Coach Randal Smith has his team ready for season opener against Lowndes.

The Pebblebrook Falcons come into the 2011 football season as a very young squad. They return only a handful of starters, but their head coach feels that the players have made enough progress in practice to produce positive results in the games.

"We are young in key areas and this is always a question mark, (but) these young men have worked extremely hard and are making improvements daily," said head coach Randal Smith.

Smith expects big things from senior quarterback CJ Goodman this season. He threw for 1,300 yards and ran for another 300 last year. Goodman will be running the offense out of the Wing-T formation. The Falcons should control the ball for long stretches if everything goes right.

"The offense must help the defense by keeping them off the field as much as possible," Smith added.

Running the ball will be senior fullback Sertonuse Harris. He gained 525 yards on the ground as a junior last season. He might not find many holes behind an offensive line that has three sophomores starting. Center Tommy Dimassimo and tackle Avery Glass return as o-line starters.

The defense will be led by linebacker Khalid Henderson, who had 64 solo tackles a season ago. Other starters in the 4-3 defense will be Charles McCline and Jarvis Ruff.

Pebblebrook starts out with a rough first game against Lowndes. The Vikings defeated the Falcons 47-7 in the season opener last year.

This year, coach Smith hopes things are different. "Lowndes is a very good team and we must cut down on mistakes," said Smith.

Despite a 4-6 record in 2010 and a 6-4 record in 2009, the Falcons have remained in playoff contention until the last regular season game. This year they feel like they are knocking on the door.

"Our young men have worked extremely hard the past two years and we have been at the door each year," said Smith. "We believe this is the year we get in."
