Five nationally- and internationally-trained musicians will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 30 young minority instrumentalists at the Bandtastic Summer Band Camp in Decatur, Georgia. On Monday, Bandtastic is sponsoring side-by-sides, in which the professionals will play alongside middle and high school instrumentalists while coaching them on technique and musicality.
The professional clinicians will include Clarinetist Bryan Crumpler, who was a featured performer in England, France, Switzerland and Belgium. Flutist Tara Byrdsong has performed in Prague, Vienna and England. Trumpeter Derrick Montgomery has performed with the Ludwig, Atlanta, Macon and Augusta Orchestras. Trombonist Robyn Smith, who has just returned from a performance at Carnegie Hall, will attend the New England Conservatory in the fall. Saxophonist Rickey Greene, twice-named teacher of the year, is the band director at Redan Middle School.
On Tuesday, June 9, there will be marching band sessions with Saxophonist Lorenzo Moore, band director at Redan High School, and a drumline sectional with percussionist Marvin Sapp.

June 8-12 is the final week of the two-week event, which is designed for 6th-11th graders. It is the 3rd annual Bandtastic Band Camp, which is being held at Peace Baptist Church, 4000 Covington Highway (former Target building) in Decatur, Georgia 30032.
The closing concert, to be held on Friday, June 12 at 2 p.m. is open to the public. It will feature a concert performance with musical selections from Disney’s “Alladin,” “Amazing,” by Bruno Mars, “Happy” by Pharrell, “Fly Like an Eagle,” by Steve Miller Band, “Espana Cani,” ”Now is the Time” (jazz) and the spiritual, ”We’ve Come This Far by Faith.” The audience will include 100 youngsters who are attending summer academic camp at Peace.
