School Notes: DeKalb Alternative School Gets New 'Reading Zone' from Atlanta Hawks
Students will see the Reading Zone for the first time during the unveiling of the $10,000 makeover on Thursday, Dec. 15.

The DeKalb Alternative School will unveil its new Reading Zone on Thursday, a $10,000 makeover courtesy of the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena.
The Atlanta Hawks Reading Zone is sponsored by Philips as part of the Hawks "Read to Achieve" program.

Atlanta Hawks player Marvin Williams and Robert Moseley, area assistant region superintendent, Region 3, are scheduled to attend the unveiling.
The basketball organization said in its announcement that nominations for the Reading Zone, designed by architecture and design firm Gensler, were accepted between August 2 and September 9 this year from groups within 50 miles of Philips Arena, serving young people under age 18.

The Atlanta Hawks also said in its press release that it picked Dekalb Alternative School "for their supportive teaching methods, content-rich environment, small class sizes and reading program that encourages students to read a minimum of 25 books each year.:
The DeKalb Alternative School serves nearly 300 students from across Dekalb County
Applicants needed to write in 350 words why a particular location should be chosen, upload photos and/or video of the site, provide the number of children served on a monthly basis and the type of programs offered at the facility.
Last week, DeKalb Alternative School student Delismar Lopez was recognized for her being a winner in the National Center for Civil and Human Rights essay contest.
