Are you ready for another round of picks?
Newnan at (Hallford): The second leg in Stephenson’s three-week battle for the Region 2-AAAAA championship brings Newnan to Halford Stadium this Friday. The Jaguars, who needed to hold off East Coweta in a 24-17 win last week, are 8-0, 5-0 in the region and face a Newnan team (5-3, 4-1) that is in third place. Stephenson and its final-week opponent M.L. King are tied for the region lead. Newnan lost to MLK 41-17 last week. The Jags, led by 1,200-yard rusher Mike Davis, will be challenged again this week, but cannot afford to let the game down to the final play. Last week, East Coweta had the ball inside the Stephenson 10, but was forced to throw an incompletion on fourth down in the final seconds. Stephenson 30, Newnan 23.
Arabia Mountain at (Avondale Stadium): The Stone Mountain Pirates (6-2, 3-2 in Region 5-AAA, Division B) could have the best overall record in the subregion and still not make the playoffs. Stone Mountain's playoff scenario plays out like this: A Pirates win must be coupled with a Columbia win over Woodward Academy. Period. That way Woodward and Stone Mountain would end up tied for third, and due to the head-to-head tiebreaker, Stone Mountain would advance to next week's No. 3 vs. No. 2 region play-in game (against Grady from the Division A subregion), with the winner earning a playoff spot. The Pirates should do their part. Stone Mountain 28, Arabia Mountain 21.
at Douglass (Grady Stadium, Saturday): The Region 6-AAAA schedule has been tough on the Redan Raiders (2-6 overall and in the region), but they get a break this week with Douglass. The Astros are 0-8 and have scored only 45 points all season. Raiders win big. Redan 30, Douglass 6.
