Music for the Crisis, a virtual concert, will feature eleven African American classical musicians using the power of music to respond to the reality of racial injustice surfacing in our nation during the time of COVID-19. The event will be presented by Challenge the Stats and Concerts @ First on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 8 p.m.
The free online concert will highlight music by classical composers of color, including the Southeast premiere of Joel Thompson's "In Response to the Madness" for String Quartet, Brandee Younger's Harp Solo "Essence of Ruby", and commentary from healthcare workers and advocates currently on the frontline pushing for change.
Among the performers are New World Symphony Violinist Chelsea Sharpe, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Principal Bassoon, Andrew Brady; Soprano Jayme Alilaw, resident artist with the Atlanta Opera; Concert pianist and composer, Brittney Boykin, world-renowned Cellist Khari Joyner and Harpist Angelica Hairston, the founder of Challenge the Stats. Challenge the Stats (CTS) exists to empower artists of color by creating communities devoted to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the classical performing arts. CTS seeks to equip audiences and artists with the tools needed to advocate for justice both inside and outside of the concert hall.
