Jim Sanders, a native of Covington, earned two degrees at Emory University, was wounded five times in World War II while serving in the army in the Pacific and later bicycled the French countryside, learning the ins and outs of wine, taking time to learn French cooking in Paris.
Jim came back to Georgia, opened the state's first fine wine retail store and went on to launch the city's first gourmet restaurants. He's best remembered for his 180 different French wines made for him and produced according to his cuvee, sold exclusively in his Atlanta stores.
Sanders wine classes were remarkable, akin to a graduate course at a university. Governors, congressmen, judges, cardiologists learned alongside housewives, hair stylists and musicians.

Prior to his death, Jim Sanders entrusted me with his notes and treasured recipes. They combine the best of Georgia and the South with the wines of France and other European regions.
During the present crisis, we are dining at home and there's no reason that this should not be enjoyable. In that spirit, Jim's Georgia Brunswick Stew recipe is provided. Believe me, you'll taste the flavors and sense the aromas from your mother and grandmother's kitchens long ago.
