'Sherman's Neckties' Sculpture Goes Up in the Village

The sculpture is part of the city's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The sculpture "Sherman's Neckties," part of the city's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, went up in the village this week.

The official unveiling won't be until August, according to George Coletti, the city historian. The sculpture stands at the corner of Main and Mountain, next to the railroad tracks.

The sculpture's name refers to the practice of Union soldiers of tearing up railroad tracks,  heating them, then bending them around trees to render them useless to the Confederacy.

The city has also commissioned a brochure for a walking tour of historical sites around the city, and that should be ready soon, Coletti said.
