Stone Mountain Park to Make Laser Show Multidimensional

Mountain will "come to life" with multidimensional effects, the park said.

is upgrading its laser show to include 3-D effects that seem to take the audience inside the mountain.

Viewers will see and hear lava flowing, see the mountain crack open, and "go inside," park spokeswoman Jeanine Jones said. "The mountain comes to life," she said, and viewers will be treated to "what the center of the earth might look like."

Oversized birds and plants will appear to be coming out of the mountain, she said.

The production will be taller than the Statue of Liberty and from four to five times as big as an IMAX screen.

"It's something you have to see to believe," Jones said.

The new show will debut Memorial Day. It will include some 3-D effects throughout and will have one segment devoted to the new technology, called Mountainvision.

The laser show has been seen by more than 25 million people since it started in 1983, the park said.

There's still time to see the old show before the upgrade. It will be showing daily from April 1-9 during the park's Spring Fun Break and then every Saturday until the new show starts Memorial Day.

Like the old show, the upgraded one will be free of charge, except for the usual $10 per car parking fee. For another $10, viewers can upgrade to get popcorn, a soft drink and a reserved seat. See the park's website for more details.
