Stone Mountain, Georgia folk artist Olivia Thomason, described by Atlanta historian Dr. Dick Funderburke as “Georgia’s Queen of Folk Art, says that she was “inspired to paint ‘When Johnny Comes Marching Home,’ and it remains an expression of what I feel deep inside.” She added that her painting, now in the Atlanta History Center, “honors all Americans who served in all wars and in peacetime. It is inclusive and very patriotic. Somewhere in it are members of my family as far back as the American Revolution, marching with others, united to protect, honor and defend all we hold dear.”
