Brockett Elementary Celebrates 50th Anniversary

A family picnic and birthday cake commemorate the milestone.

Brockett Elementary celebrated the school's 50th anniversary on Friday with a picnic on the grounds.  Families brought blankets and dinner and the PTA provided drinks, watermelon, and enough birthday cake for everyone.

Aaron Elya from Kicks 101.5 was on hand to emcee the event, and he led the crowd in singing "Happy Birthday" before current principal Lynda Mauborgne, along with past principals Elizabeth Heckman and Dr. Tricia Sumpter, cut the cake.

Throughout the event, parents and teachers chatted while kids played in the yard and participated in hula hoop and freeze dancing contests with the DJ.  Later, PTA president Jen Burkart led a conga line around the cafeteria while the crowd cheered.

"While we were celebrating our 50th birthday, the picnic is something I'd like to see become an annual event, perhaps as either a Spring Fling or End-of-Year Celebration.  Watching the kids follow Jen Burkart around in the conga line was priceless," said PTA President-elect Paula Garrett.

Along with the three principals, several current and former teachers attended the event with their families.  "We are so proud of our school and it showed with our past principals and teachers who joined us," said Jen Burkhart.

While Friday was a day full of celebration for Brockett (Field Day took place during the school day, before the picnic), the school has been celebrating the anniversary all year.  In January, a time capsule from 1991 was opened, and items including newspapers, a yearbook, textbooks, pictures, and a quilt made from kindergarten handprints were discovered.  The items from the time capsule, along with pictures taken when it was opened, are on display in the school's lobby.

“Brockett has a culturally diverse population.  Today, we celebrate not only 50 great years, but we are celebrating a gem in this community - a great school that represents the rich diversity in Tucker,” Jen Burkhart said.
