Livsey Celebrates 40th Birthday with a Family Picnic

PTA sponsored the event, which included dinner and live music

As a roller coaster of a year for the Livsey Elementary School community winds to a close, there are many things worth celebrating.  The school marks its 40th anniversary this year, and the PTA decided that a party was in order.  In addition, Livsey went through quite a scare when the DeKalb County School System (DCSS) unveiled its initial redistricting and consolidation plan in January.  After much community participation in the process and advocating on the school's behalf, however, Livsey was spared, and that, too, deserved a celebration.

On Friday night, the Livsey PTA sponsored the "Celebrate Livsey" party to commemorate the 40th birthday of the school, as well as the fact that the school remained open with all current students intact after redistricting. In addition, the party was to welcome the new Livsey families coming over next fall from the Pleasantdale district.

Approximately 500 people attended the event, which took place on the playground and Livsey's "top field" area.  The PTA provided dinner from Subway and desserts from Rita's Italian Ice, and Douglas Brake and the Sizzle, Hiss, Pop Band provided entertainment.  The weather cooperated, and kids danced with the band, played on the playground equipment, and started a football game while parents socialized.

Several friends of Livsey and key advocates for the school were invited to the celebration.  Not all were able to attend, but Kevin Levitas, former Georgia House Representative from the Livsey district, made an appearance, as did Dan Drake, DCSS Director of Planning and Forecasting.  Many teachers and staff members stayed after hours to celebrate, as well.

"It really went very well, and we were so pleased with the turnout," said Nanci McClendon, who organized the event.  "Livsey has a lot to be proud of, and we're glad so many people were able to come and celebrate it with us."
