Cobb EMC Literacy Week brings award-winning authors to local schools

Cobb EMC’s third annual Literacy Week brought four award-winning children’s book authors to schools across the cooperative’s five-county service area.

The program, held November 5-9, was designed to encourage students’ love of reading, their creativity and to inspire their imaginations.

Guest authors included New York Times bestselling author Brian Lies, Diane Shore of Marietta, Ga., and Georgia’s own Gail Karwoski and Robyn Hood Black. Each challenged students to expand their creativity through writing and to build life-long reading habits.

Throughout the week, authors visited Allatoona Elementary, Baker Elementary, Boston Elementary, Cheatham Hill Elementary, Cornerstone Preparatory Academy, Due West Elementary, Ford Elementary, High Meadows School, Lewis Elementary, Murdock Elementary, North Cobb Christian, Russell Elementary, Russom Elementary, Timber Ridge Elementary and the main branch of the Cobb County Library. Presentations were also made Tuesday at the Tellus Science Center, offering learning opportunities for students who were out of school on Election Day.  

To help familiarize students with the featured authors, Cobb EMC donated their books to a number of the schools’ media centers. Authors signed these, along with students’ personal copies, during the event.

Cobb EMC Literacy Week is one of the cooperative’s many commitments to education, including a Partner in Education program, student mentoring and career days, among others.
