How To Avoid Computer Virus Infections

The computer repair business is not all about working with computer boards and drives. As a matter of fact, most of my work is actually computer virus related, not hardware related.

I firmly believe that educating my customers as to how to avoid getting another virus is as important as cleaning the computer itself. I will use this blog as a way of educating my Powder Springs neighbors on how to avoid getting a computer virus.

Below are the first seven ways to avoid computer viruses and spyware infections.

1.   Make sure your anti-virus software is active and up to date.

2.   Install Windows updates as soon as they are available.

3.   Use a Web browser other than Internet Explorer, like Chrome or Firefox.

4.   Be very careful on Facebook. There are many bad links that as soon as you click on them your computer is infected.

5.   Don't open emails from people you don't know. Also be very careful opening email attachments even from friends.

6.   Stay away from music and other "file sharing" sites. When I walk up to a machine and see evidence of it using these sites, I know it's got virus infections.

7.   Once a week run a deep virus scan using your installed and up-to-date anti-virus software.

Over the next several days, I will explain in greater detail how to follow through on these steps to help you avoid getting your computer infected.

My company's slogan “Computers are great!... When they work!” goes totally opposite when your machine is infected, and many get stressed and consider throwing it out the window.

If your machine is already infected, it is very important to contact me or someone to clean it ASAP. The longer the infection is allowed to stay means more damage to your files, and it will get more difficult (cost more) to get it cleaned.
