New Computer, Phone Scam Alert

New phone scam alert: a phone call from someone claiming to be a "Microsoft Certified Technician" saying your computer is infected.

I just wanted to make you all aware of the latest computer-related phone scam!

Several customers and myself have received a phone call from someone claiming to be a “Certified Microsoft Technician” who then proceeds to tell you your PC is infected and they will help you clean it. They advise you to go through a few routines, which without telling you will give them access to your PC. Once they have access, they will infect your PC, then offer to clean it for a price.

Please don’t fall for this!

Microsoft Certified Technicians (which I have been for over 10 years) have no legitimate way of knowing if your computer is infected or not. Phone calls or software from unknown sources that tell you your computer has infections or problems are too good to be true, because they are a scam!

OK, so what happens if you fall for it? You will give them you credit card number and they will charge you the quoted $40 or $50, but after a few more days you will see much more coming out of you credit card or bank account and they will continue to drain your account.

When you do receive these phone calls, the caller ID is masked or faked. Your response to them is a personal decision, but be sure not to give them any personal information.
