Friday Football Preview

Hillgrove and McEachern head into tonight with 1-0 records, while Lithia Springs will need an offensive spark to grab their first win of the season.

McEachern (1-0) at Lowndes (2-0)—No one can accuse of shying away from competition in its non-region schedule. The Indians were up to the task two weeks ago, and now they travel to Valdosta in one of the state’s premiere matchups of the week.

Lowndes has made it at least as far as the state semifinals in six of the past seven years and has three state championships in that span. They’ve already beat up South Gwinnett (45-13) and Pebblebrook (45-14) this season. McEachern is ranked fifth in the state in class AAAAA and should pose the biggest threat yet to the Vikings’ No. 1 ranking.

Marietta (0-1) at Hillgrove (1-0)—Marietta’s defense struggled against South Cobb in its season opening 33-26 loss. That could serve as a good omen for the Hawks as the Blue Devils now have to focus on stopping ’s powerful attack, led by future Alabama Crimson Tide running back Kenyon Drake. The Blue Devils’ best bet may be to ride the shoulders of talented quarterback Anthony Jennings and keep the Hillgrove offense off the field. But that will be easier said than done, as Drake rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries in their a week ago.

Cedartown (1-0) at Lithia Springs (0-1)— finds itself in desperate need of an offensive spark as the Lions scored just six points in a season-opening loss to Haralson County. They’ll look for their first win of the season as they host Cedartown, a team they beat 33-22 a season ago.
