GreyStone: Sunday Storms Left 13,000 Without Power

Power has since been restored to those affected in GreyStone's eight-county service area. Powder Springs and Highway 120 in Paulding were among the areas hit by the severe thunderstorm and flash flooding.

West Cobb residents were among the GreyStone Power Corporation customers who lost power Sunday due to severe thunderstorms and flash flooding.

GreyStone officials on Monday reported that linemen worked to restore electric service to 13,000 members in the wake of Sunday’s weather. Their efforts continued throughout the evening as they worked to fix 22 broken poles and downed power lines.

More than half of the 13,000 power outages were in Fulton County, the corporation said. Other areas that were hit hard included Lithia Springs, South Cobb including Powder Springs, and Highway 120 in Paulding.

Additional crews were called to assist with restoring power as quickly as possible. Seven crews from Carroll EMC, Diverse Power, Snapping Shoals EMC and Pike Electric lent helping hands to the GreyStone crews.

By Monday morning, crews had restored power to all but 500 or so customers. In all, GreyStone serves more than 104,500 members in portions of eight counties, including Cobb.

In addition to the power outages, some Powder Springs residents saw other effects from the storms. Maj. Matt Boyd, spokesman for the Powder Springs Police Department, said a tree fell on Powder Springs Dallas Road just west of Angham Road. Two police officers and a Mableton man, Luke Cobb, used a chainsaw to completely clear the roadway.

Boyd added that authorities received an increased number of home alarm calls due to the weather.
