Police: Man Profits from False Report

A Hiram man lied to authorities about a woman stealing his vehicle, and after she was charged with the theft, he made her pay him $500 to try to have the warrant removed, police said.

Leonard Roshay Davie, 54, told on Feb. 3 that a woman had driven off with his 1998 Chrysler Town and Country van the day before, according to a police report. Davie said he had tried to call her, but she didn’t answer.

Police were able to reach her by phone. She said she had parked the van in the Marietta Square and had lost the keys. The woman was then charged with theft by taking of a vehicle.

But during a hearing on the charge in front of Cobb Magistrate Court Judge Joan Bloom on March 12, Davie said he had talked with woman “numerous times” that day, the report says. He said he had told the woman to go to the Chrysler dealership on Highway 41 in Marietta to have new key made.

“Had I had these facts the day the warrant was obtained, I would have exonerated her from prosecution,” the report says.

The hearing also revealed that on Feb. 9, the woman and Davie went to the Magistrate Court office to have the warrant against the woman rescinded.

“Once at the office, he refused to go to the warrant window until she gave him $500,” the report says. She withdrew the money from her bank and gave it to him, but was still unable to get the warrant rescinded, it adds.

While at the hearing, Davie was arrested and charged with false report of a crime and threatening a witness. He made bail from the Cobb County jail the same day, jail records show.
