Powder Springs Sets Fireworks Make-Up Date

Residents disappointed by the stormy weather that canceled Powder Springs’ 18th-annual Independence Day Celebration can now mark their calendars if they wish to come to a fireworks show.

The July 4 event had been one of many celebrations across metro Atlanta that were ultimately postponed or canceled due to the weather—it was canceled the day before due to the forecast. Mayor Pat Vaughn during last week’s Powder Springs City Council meeting said it was the first time in 18 years the event was canceled the day before, adding that the city has had two of its Independence Day events rained out.

“We hate [that] it was rained out, but I think it was rained out over the state of Georgia, except in downtown Atlanta,” Vaughn said.

But Vaughn said city leaders expect to offer residents one portion of the rained-out event—the evening fireworks show—during another event later this year.

“We know do that Oct. 5 will be ‘Powder Springs Day,’ which is the city celebration, and we are going to have fireworks that evening,” she said. The event will mark the city’s 175th year of existence.

“We are contemplating whether or not to have a concert that was already promised for the Fourth of July, and we are trying to settle on a date for that,” Vaughn said, referring to The GLOW Band, which was set to headline the Independence Day event.

Another group, the Little River Band, is set to headline Powder Springs Day. The group, formed in Australia in 1975, according to the band’s website, is known for such songs as “Reminiscing,” “Lonesome Loser,” “Lady” and “Cool Change.” (A music video of “Reminiscing” is attached to this article.)

The city council’s next scheduled meeting is an Aug. 14 work session. The next business session will be Monday, Aug. 19.
