Ram Readers Come in Second in Divisional Play
Though the finish in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl brings an end to their state championship hopes, the team still has high spirits after a successful run.

The Ram Readers finished second in divisional play Saturday in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl at Thurgood Marshall Elementary in Morrow, GA.
The finish eliminates them from the reading tournament because only the first-place finishers from two division playoffs get to compete for the state championship.
But the finish isn’t something the team of 12 from is hanging their heads about, said PTA fundraising chairwoman Kimberly Smith whose son, Jarrod, is one of the team’s founding members and a co-captain.

In only their second year, the Ram Readers proved they can hang with the best of ‘em, Smith said.

“Bottom line, they were one of the top four in the state,” she said, referencing the team’s second-place finish in one of the two divisional playoffs. “I think it’s amazing. I mean, the kids worked so hard, to see it pay off, it’s awesome.”
The Ram Readers moved on to divisional play after in one of six regional bowls earlier this month.
The reading bowl quizzes students on 17 selected books in a trivia-style format. There are divisions for elementary, middle and high school.
Smith’s son will soon be a graduate of Austell Intermediate, and she doesn’t know yet where he will be attending in the fall. But she assured that if that school doesn’t have a reading team, she would spearhead the effort.
