WOODSTOCK, GA -- Elementary school teachers in the Cherokee County School District recently kicked off a new reading and writing instruction initiative with training from the Scholastic publishing company.
During the two and a half days of professional development coordinated by district's Office of Curriculum & Instruction and provided by 30 Scholastic trainers, kindergarten through fifth-grade teachers learned about new English Language Arts instructional resources, with a focus on guided reading and balanced literacy.
Kindergarten and first-grade teachers also received additional training in Wilson Fundations phonics instruction.

“I believe the materials that schools are obtaining through the English Language Arts adoption, along with the training that teachers are receiving to successfully implement balanced literacy in the classroom, will equip teachers and students with the tools that they need to enhance the level of instruction, improve the acquisition of knowledge and increase the love of reading and writing,” said Tammy Castleberry, the district's supervisor for elementary curriculum.
Teachers received numerous tools and resources and had opportunities to ask questions and learn with colleagues during the training held at two high schools.
