Cherokee School Buses Undergo Annual Inspection

Officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety's Motor Carrier Compliance division visited the Cherokee County School District bus garages in Holly Springs and Woodstock last week to conduct their annual inspection of the school district's transportation fleet.  

More than 400 regular route, special education services and substitute buses were checked in preparation for the 2014-15 school year.

The school district's bus fleet transports approximately 23,000 students on morning routes and 26,000 students in the afternoon, which is about 70 percent of the student population.  

Cherokee's Transportation Department runs 1,500 routes each school day, for a total of more than 4.5 million miles each year.  

A school bus must pass inspection with the Georgia Department of Public Safety annually, or the vehicle cannot be used to transport school children.  

Each bus was brought into the garage and raised on a lift so inspectors could check tires, brake systems and other safety features to ensure the buses are ready to carry their precious cargo.
