Cherokee Schools Make Weather Decision For Monday, Jan. 9

BREAKING: Local officials continue to urge motorists to stay off the road, as many streets still contain snow and ice.

CANTON, GA -- Due to current road conditions in shaded areas throughout the county, the Cherokee County School District has cancelled classes for students and staff members for Monday, Jan. 9.

The announcement was made Sunday afternoon by Superintendent Dr. Brian Hightower after district officials met with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and the Cherokee Emergency Management Agency to assess road conditions throughout the county.

"He and his staff will work diligently in order to clear trouble spots during sunlight hours tomorrow in order to make an assessment for Tuesday," the system said, referring to Dr. Hightower.

Slick spots on roads, bridges and sidewalks will make traveling hazardous, and areas that are susceptible to black ice will be elevated roadways and off ramps, shaded areas and secondary roads, the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency said Sunday.

The sheriff's office notes temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until mid-morning Monday.

"Although, major roads have been treated, sunshine and warmer temperatures are needed in order for the salt to work adequately," the agency said Sunday on its Facebook page. "[Cherokee County] Roads and Bridges crews have been working diligently to clear roads but only so much can be done with the amount of ice/snow remaining on roads and current weather conditions. Please be patient and if you don't have to travel today, stay home and enjoy time with your family. If you must travel, use extreme caution. There have already been several accidents today."
