Cherokee Schools Starts ‘Math Madness'

WOODSTOCK-TOWNE LAKE, GA - From Cherokee County School District: The Cherokee County School District seeks to score with a new math campaign and competition connected to the excitement of college basketball’s “March Madness.”

The month-long CCSD Math Madness celebration begins this week in schools across CCSD, with activities planned by the Office of Curriculum & Instruction that encourage problem-solving, real-world math application… and fun! Students in kindergarten through fifth grade also will have the chance to win prizes through an i-Ready competition using CCSD’s online math system.

“Each week provides opportunities to enthusiastically participate in mathematical endeavors and showcase the connection mathematics has in all our lives,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nicole H. Holmes, whose office is coordinating the activities.

For the i-Ready competition, students will earn credit as they continue to complete their lessons on the system as they do year-round, and they will advance in the contest as they work individually on the system and increase their learning level.

A District-wide Champion School and Champion Class will be recognized with a plaque for display at their school, as will the top school from each Innovation Zone (the elementary schools for each high school). The top class from each Zone will win a pizza party. The top 3 individual students will each receive a plaque and i-Ready goody bag. All of the prizes are sponsored by Curriculum Associates.

Other highlights include a March 8 college basketball team spirit day with the opportunity to wear your own spirit wear and hats to school; a Pi Day celebration on March 14; and virtual lessons featuring Georgia Tech Research Institute leaders Erick Maxwell, an expert in radio-frequency/microwave Circuits and Systems, and Barbara Fox, a research scientist in its Cyber Technology and Information Security Lab, interacting with CCSD students via video-conference.
