Sagging gutter in Woodstock? The problem is usually the board behind it

If a gutter on your house has started to sag or pull away at one end, the gutter is usually not what failed. The fascia board behind it has gone soft, and around here it rots from the back, where the gutter hides it, so there is nothing to see from the ground until the screws stop holding.

Woodstock was built in loblolly pine. Needles do not wash through a gutter the way leaves do, they mat and hold water, and the overflow runs down the back face of a board that was never primed on that side.

You can check yours in five minutes without a ladder. Sight down each gutter run the way you would sight down a plank, because a sound one is dead straight. Then look at the siding under either end of the run for a dark streak, which is water that has been coming over the back.
