CTC Police to Host 'CRASE' Training at Woodstock Campus

The Chattahoochee Technical College Police Department will offer Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training at no cost to the community. The seminars will be held at the Woodstock Campus, 8371 Main Street, on Friday, Aug. 26. Participants can attend either a seminar that will run from 10 a.m. to noon or a second seminar from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The free training sessions are intended to educate civilians on what they should do if faced with an active shooter event.

“It is critical that civilians remember the importance of having a plan in place for surviving an active shooter attack. A simple plan could substantially increase a person’s chance of surviving such an attack,” CTC Police Chief Charles Spann said.

As Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council-certified officers, Chattahoochee Technical College campus police officers are required to conduct force-on-force training twice a year. To ensure civilians are also prepared for active shooter incidents, the department has rolled out a training program for the community. The training sessions are designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, the role of professional guardians, civilian response options, medical issues and drills.

“The whole purpose of the class is to inform the public of the things they can and need to do if they find themselves in a place where an active shooter event takes place,” said CTC Officer Tim Hilley. “The biggest benefit of the class is that it shows citizens how they need to be aware of their surroundings no matter where they are and how to react if something does occur.”

There is no sign-up required to participate in this program.
