'Get Cherokee Reading' Gives Books To Students
Retired CCSD Media Specialist Rebecca Amerson drove her custom-painted camper to three schools loaded with books for students.
WOODSTOCK, GA — The Cherokee County School District on Monday launched its month-long reading campaign, "Get Cherokee Reading," by delivering books to Title I schools in the county.
Retired Media Specialist Rebecca Amerson drove her custom-painted "bookmobile" camper to Oak Grove Elementary School Fine Arts Academy, Canton Elementary School STEM Academy and Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy, loaded down with books provided by the district's Curriculum & Instruction Division (For more news like this, find your local Patch here. "Our 'Get Cherokee Reading' campaign aligns with the Georgia initiative going on across the state," said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nicole Holmes. "Inviting Ms. Amerson back to visit our schools and offer books to children while sharing her love of reading was a creative way to launch our initiative. We want to see everyone reading this month in Cherokee County."

Ms. Amerson invited students into her Bookmobile to select a book, and she told them about her reading and camping adventures. Her custom-painted camper includes some of her favorite book titles, as well as a quote from Thomas Jefferson: "I cannot live without books."
After selecting books and reading with their principal outside the Bookmobile, students carried a box of 50 books into their school to add to the media center. The Curriculum and Instruction Division has multiple literacy initiatives going on throughout the month designed to "Get Cherokee Reading." This school year has brought a new focus on reading in the primary grades, with the adoption of a balanced literacy approach to reading and more classroom instructional blocks focused on reading.
