'Green-Dot' Jury Duty Scams Resurface in Woodstock

Another wave of scams involving suspects telling residents to pay up for missing jury duty has been reported in Cherokee County.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said the scam involves a suspect contacting residents by phone, and identifying himself as a sheriff’s deputy. The person “then proceeds to explain to the victim that there is a warrant out for their arrest because they failed to report to jury duty,” the agency said in a press release.

To avoid being arrested, the suspect informs the caller they need to purchase a Green-Dot pre-paid reloadable card in the amount of $1,347 and take that card to the sheriff’s office’s South Annex on Main Street in Woodstock.

The suspect, who provides the victim with a phone number, has called the precinct to record the greeting, said sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker.

“If the victim calls the number provided by the suspect, they will hear a legitimate recording from that precinct,” he added.

Sheriff’s office deputies on Sunday took filed three reports from residents who received a call from the suspect.

“Fortunately no one has provided the suspect with a Green-Dot card or the numbers required to access the funds on a green dot card,” Baker added.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office does not call citizens to solicit money for any reason, and does not arrange to meet with citizens to pay off a warrant. Any resident who receives a similar call are advised not to provide any personal information and to call 911 to report the incident,” Baker added.
