Cherokee Sheriff's Office Warns of Georgia Power Payment Scam
A person claiming to be from the company is calling residents and threatening to cut off their power if they don't pay over the phone.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam involving people threatening residents with loss of electricity if they do not make a payment over the phone.
The agency said on Monday that residents should be ”extremely careful” of anyone calling their home and posing as a representative of a utility company.
Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson with the sheriff’s office, said the department has received information from residents that they’ve received phone calls from a person claiming to work with Georgia Power.

This person would threaten to cut off a resident’s power if he or she did not make a payment over the phone, Baker said.
“This is a scam,” Baker added. “Georgia Power does not contact customers by phone and request payment.”
