Habitat Holds September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance

September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance

Habitat North Central Georgia held a ceremony last Saturday to honor those who lost their lives on September 11th and those who rose in service afterward.  The ceremony took place in the Villages at Park Creek neighborhood where Habitat is currently building three homes.  The keynote speaker for the event was Michael Caldwell, State Representative of District 20.

It was a beautiful morning and the construction site was filled with volunteers, sponsors, community members, family members and Habitat staff.  Several of the volunteers in attendance were veterans and first responders.  Two moments of silence were held at the times the terrorist-piloted jets struck the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center.

Russ Hayes, CEO of Habitat North Central Georgia, stated, “We not only honored the victims of the 9/11 attacks and those who voluntarily rushed to their aid, but we prayed for our servicemen and women around the world who are now or will soon find themselves in harm’s way.”

After the ceremony, volunteers stayed to help paint the three Habitat homes. Those who worked that day were representatives from the Cherokee Association of Realtors, Team Rubicon, Women Build volunteers and Wells Fargo.

Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds simple, decent homes for purchase by low income families who demonstrate a capacity for responsible homeownership.  Since its inception in 1995, 253 homes have been completed and over 1000 family members have been served in North Fulton, Cherokee and Forsyth/Dawson Counties.  Each family is required to attend 10 educational classes and perform 200-300 sweat equity hours.  Families earn between 30% and 60% of the Atlanta median income and purchase their homes from Habitat which provides them with a 30-year, no-interest loan.  Family members work side by side with volunteers, sponsors and Habitat staff to build their homes. These families not only get to experience the pride of homeownership but they also know that their lives will be changed forever.
