Infant, Adults Uninjured In Canton House Fire

The fire heavily damaged the front porch of the home on Waleska Street.

CANTON, GA — The front porch of a home near downtown Canton sustained heavy damage in a fire reported Monday evening, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said. Crews were dispatched just before 7 p.m. March 5 to the fire on Waleska Street.

Crews arrived to find flames raging on the front porch of the house. Cherokee County Fire Investigator Shane Daniel said the blaze appeared to have been caused by "smoking materials being discarded in a plastic flower pot."

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within an hour of arriving at the scene. The residents inside the house, consisting of seven adults and a 7-month-old baby, were able to escape without suffering any injuries, CCFES said (For more news like this, find your local Patch here. Along with the front porch, parts of the attic suffered severe damage and a bedroom received smoke, water and fire damage.

Crews blocked off Waleska Street until the cleanup was complete. The road was reopened around 9:40 p.m. Monday.
