Johnston Elementary Receives Portrait of School's Namesake
The school on East Cherokee Drive is named after Florine Dial Johnston, an educator and Woodstock native.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Johnston Elementary School on Dec. 1 was presented with a portrait of its namesake, well-loved educator and Woodstock native Florine Dial Johnston, a popular educator who died in 1979.
On hand to present the framed painting to the school were two of Johnston's surviving sons, William J. Johnston of Woodstock, and Richard Johnston and his wife, who reside in Atlanta.
Richard Johnston said the painting was well received by staff, teachers and students, and expects the portrait will be displayed at the school for many years to come.

Johnston Elementary School principal Amy Graham added the painting will be on display at the school's media center. The portrait (24 inches x 18 inches, oil on linen) was created by Atlanta-based artist Charles Young Walls. Walls relied on multiple family photographs of Johnston, as well as stories and reminiscences from family members to create the vignette-style likeness.

"Posthumous portraits are always a challenge, for the goal is to see beyond any photographs and find the real person," Walls said. "I am very honored that the Johnston family chose me to play this small part in continuing Florine's legacy as an educator and benefactor."
