Teasley Middle School physical science teacher Rhonda Edge and her daughter, E.T. Booth Middle School physical science teacher Holly Edge Mullinax, share a passion for teaching and learning.

The mother-daughter duo has collaborated and shared exciting laboratory exercises and engaging lesson plans for the past five years. This school year, the educators are taking their collaboration to the next level using Lifesize video-conferencing equipment.

Both classes recently gathered around their respective school’s video-conferencing equipment to meet their new virtual lab partners and to discuss the lab results from the previous week.

The students introduced themselves and listened as their cross-county peers talked about Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid, which was the subject of the week’s lab.

The following Wednesday, the classes discussed the results from their Solar Ovens projects. Students had designed and built their own solar ovens then tested them by cooking s’mores and measuring the temperature of the ovens. The classes were excited to be comparing designs and working together to figure out why certain materials worked better than others.

Both Edge and Mullinax plan to continue having these collaborative conferences every Wednesday as the school year progresses. Topics such as the science fair and compounds and mixtures will be covered in the coming weeks.
